Twitter may have started in the United States, where the majority of tweets originate, but it no longer has the world’s most active Twitter city.
That distinction belongs to Jakarta, Indonesia, with its metro population of more than 28 million. Nearly 2.5 percent of tweets that include the location of the Twitter user originated there in June 2012.
Jakarta was followed by Tokyo, London, Sao Paulo, and New York.
Consumer insight firm Semiocast compiled the data, which includes the top 20 countries in terms of number of Twitter accounts. Here are the top five from the list:
1. United States
4. United Kingdom
And here are the 10 most active Twitter cities:
4. Sao Paulo
5. New York
6. Bandung (Indonesia)
8. Los Angeles
10. Riyadh (Saudi Arabia)
