When a passenger on a Delta Airlines flight began shouting at a Muslim woman and her children, flight attendants did not react with the proper sensitivity, according to the woman and her brother, a policy director with the Arab-American Anti-Discrimination Committee.

According to reports, a passenger on the Monday flight from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, to Detroit shouted “This is America!” and religious insults at the woman, Darlene Hider, who wears a hijab. A flight attendant reacted by asking Hider and her kids to move to other open seats rather than asking the woman shouting things to stop. At one point, according to Hider, a flight attendant said she was at her “wit’s end” and threatened to kick the family off the plane.

Hider’s brother, Abed A. Ayoub, tweeted this after Monday’s flight:

Passenger has recording of what happened on @Delta flight. Bigot threatens Muslim family. Crew does nothing. @DeltaAssist
