Yahoo responds to work-from-home controversy

The company issued a brief statement as the PR storm over work/life balance issues rages.

Last week, Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer issued a memo banning working remotely, setting of an international debate. The company was criticized by many, lauded by few.

On Tuesday, Yahoo issued a brief statement to The New York Times first published:

“This isn’t a broad industry view on working from home. This is about what is right for Yahoo right now.”

Yahoo refused to comment on a front-page Times story that ran Tuesday morning. It issued the statement to the paper on Tuesday afternoon, according to the Times.

The leaked internal memo from the company last week stated: “Speed and quality are often sacrificed when we work from home. We need to be one Yahoo!, and that starts with physically being together.”
