Reddit’s influence on AI visibility once looked almost untouchable.

In April, marketing software company Profound found it accounted for 57% of ChatGPT’s social citations in the U.S. and more than half across every country it studied. By June, Reddit had become ChatGPT’s top cited domain overall, at 8.5% of citations, per Foundation Labs. ChatGPT was explicitly searching for Reddit in its background queries about 24 times more often than earlier in the year.

As the saying goes, all good things must come to an end. Software firm PromptWatch found Reddit averaged 3.83% of ChatGPT Search citations from July 18 through Aug. 7. By Aug. 14, its share had fallen to about 0.5%, an 86% drop that also showed up across other AI search engines. Google AI Overviews citations fell 11% and Google AI Mode fell 31% over the same window, according to Axios.

The exact cause remains unconfirmed and the datasets measure different populations, but together they expose the same risk for comms teams: Today’s dominant AI source can change tomorrow.

The fix starts with knowing how much of your evidence depends on any one source.

Run the COVER audit

Use COVER to identify concentration risk across the sources shaping your AI visibility.

C: Community. Is the conversation about your organization concentrated on one platform, such as Reddit, or spread across several?

O: Owned. When AI tools cite your website, are important claims independently supported elsewhere?

V: Verification. Are core facts about your organization consistent across authoritative databases and directories?

E: Earned. Do credible publications connect your organization with the issues where you want authority?

R: Recognized experts. Are analysts and independent authorities reinforcing your expertise in their own work?

If one domain carries a disproportionate share of the evidence supporting an important brand claim, flag it.

Repeat the COVER audit quarterly and whenever a major AI platform materially changes its search or citation behavior. Name one person to track where citations originate and how that mix changes over time.

Reddit can weather this shift because AI tools account for relatively little of its traffic, its comms chief told Axios. Your organization may have less room for error.

That is why GEO should be built on a broad base of credible sources rather than whichever domain happens to be winning with AI today.
